rough idle at start up 700 1985

hi all
i new to volvos so i am learning all the time
the problem i am having is when i start the car it idles rough and rpm is about 600.
When it warms up everthing is ok so i did some reading and found out there is iac valve. I pulled it out and checked it and cleaned it put it back in and soon as i go to start the car it shuts and will not open
Is there a senor or somthing that sends a signal to the iac to say its cold and open up.
i have found a senor in the block under number 3 approx which i dont know what it is for
hope somebody can help me or lead me in the right direction
thanks Lindon

The 1985 cars have a wiring-harness problem, which results in the crumbling of the wire-insulation. Have you replaced your wiring-harness ? If not check each wire and make sure they are not shorting each other. Check under the intake-manifold area (where the IAC is located) as that's where the crumbling starts. Also check the wiring near the grey-connectors near the A/C dryer. Basically - check all the wiring in the engine first.
