bigger oil filter 200 1981

Just did the monthly oil change. Getting down to 0 to 5 degrees Celsius at morning start up so I am back to 10w30 mineral based.

Got a filter at Canadian Tire that is almost twice as long as the regular filter; thread and gasket matched, but it seemed to have larger holes. This was the only other filter listed for volvos in their guide. There is the 7328, and this one. Good/bad/indifferent idea?

What kind of oil did you use before? Synthetics are MUCH better in the cold. 200 1981

What kind of oil did you use before, if it wasn't mineral based? Did you use synthetic? If so, you made a big mistake -- synthetic is MUCH better in cold temperatures for early morning start-up. You just might want a different viscosity.

Like others here I would avoid the Cdn Tire filter. They buy them by the 100,000's, and from the very cheapest bidder. Draw your own conclusions....and put it in your next garage sale.

The Purolator you have been using is a decent filter. So is the NAPA "Gold" - it's made by Wix, a good mfgr.

Voted best for our engines is the Mann W-917. Painted a brighter white with several languages and a Volvo p/n on it, it's sold at your dealer for more than twice the price. But look in the Yellow pages for European car parts stores and they will probably have the Mann at a better $$.

Some years ago, I bought a flat of 12 "Volvo" (ie the Mann's) at our dlr and they gave me the trade price of $72CDN for the dozen...not bad!

And with the Cdn winter coming on, all our cars have 5W30 in them (and Mobil-1 at that).

Do yourself and your engine a favour; spend a few extra bucks and get a Mann or Volvo filter. Your car will thank you. 'Cambodian Tire' filters are usually very poor grade. I say usually because they switch around theri manufacturers; you never know what you will be getting. Not so with Mann or Volvo.

I until recently used the PH3569 (purolator?). Then found this board and switched to Mann from FCPGroton. They ship by USPS so no brokerage fees. A case will do you for a while.

volvo issuued a bulletin about longer filters in the 80's-short version, don't. the harmonics of the motor tend to shake them loose or break them at the seam where the body meets the threaded top of the filter. that's why the newest filter is shorter than the 1 available in the 80's-the old 1266286. the 1307 napa is a good replacement. you probably got the 1 for a ford, they are the same as volvo, just about twice as long. good luck, chuck.

Must have missed that memo :) Maybe the filters were just not that good to begin with. I've been using the biggest, baddest mofo oil filter around - the Fram PH8A - or as long as I can remember without a single problem. At least since the time the factory filter "shrank", and I thought "Dude, where's my filter?".

No problems with drainback either; the oil light is off by the time I release the starter. The stubby oil filters could completely drain and you'd probably never realize it, they just fill back up right away, but there's not nearly the same surface area for the filter element as you'd get with the PH8A. The oil stays clean for a long time too.

      Buy American.

" there's not nearly the same surface area for the filter element as you'd get with the PH8A."
That's why I was using the PH3569. I noticed that the recommended filter was smaller, but I wanted more filter. So I stuck with the larger size even though it was no longer mentioned.

But when I got on this board, only Mann (and Volvo) were recommended. So I moved to the smaller size.

    Stef,
Canadian tire filters aren't in my opinion very good. If you have a Napa store near you get one of there gold filters. They meet OEM specifications.

    All the best.

Thanks. It is a 3569 I have on there now.

I don't leave them on for very long, month or 2 at most, same with the oil. Does the quality of the filter matter when you change it often?

        - Does the quality of the filter matter when you change it often?
        Sure it does.

Cheaper paper for the filter may not actually filter out crap so well.

Anti-drainback valves that leak means that oil has to travel farther to reach the head on startup. If the oil light stays on a bit longer on startup, that's a clue.

Bypass valves that leak means that some oil doesn't even get filtered, so crap will just recirculate throughout the entire system.

The difference in price of a cheap filter versus a good one isn't much, but it makes a big difference.

The one of most important aspects of a filter is the quality of the anti-drain-back valve. when you start the car after it's been sitting for a good while you want that oil light to go off is a few seconds...this means that the oil has not drained out of the filter and you get to full oil pressure right away. The first start up of the day is when the most wear takes place.

I've had NAPA filters on and it would take over 6 seconds for the light to go off.

buy a case of Mann filters off the internet....Swedish Engineering always has them on special...under 4 bucks US.
