not starting after 1st time started 200 1989

I can't figure this one out.

Car usually starts fine. However, sometimes - not all the time - if I try to restart the car after shutting it off, it simply won't start. It does this when the car is warm, and when the car is cold. Usually if I wait 10-15 minutes, it'll start right back up. It doesn't always do it, either. Car is an 89 245 with 150k km on it.

Any suggestions on where to look, and how to solve this problem next time it happens would be most appreciated.

    Update:

After having half a dozen no-starts over 3 days, I took apart the plug coming from the crank sensor and cleaned off the prongs with a bit of sandpaper.

    Since then, no problems.

In case anyone is wondering where to find the plug, it's on the firewall, above the engine, directly in line with the fuel injectors. Leaning into the engine compartment from the passenger side I think it was the 5th clip over - the other 4 clips hold the wiring harness.

If you're still in doubt, do what I did - go to the dealer, see if they have the part in stock, and ask to take a look at it - once you see it, it'll be pretty obvious :)

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

you need more info. does it have spark? does it have injection pulse? does it have fuel pressure? can you hear the fuel pumps run when you turn the car on before it doesn't start? good luck, chuck.

From what I can tell, there's no spark, and when I pulled a plug after cranking for a bit with no start, the plug was dry.

I'm thinking it's the crank sensor - the last time it happened, I played with the sensor plug a bit, and it started right up...I'll be taking the connection apart and cleaning it today to see if that makes a difference.

I had this exact same problem.. for me it was the crank position sensor. But I'm sure there are several things that could go wrong and cause similar problems.
