front wheel bearing seal 140-160 1969

I am repacking my front wheel bearings and have a question regarding the inner seal. The original seal that I removed was tin with a felt on the surface that contacted the stub axle. The replacement is a 2 piece combo....A rubber v-seal with a metal seal washer. It is not obvious to me how this new seal/washer should be installed. Do I put the seal on the stub axle and than slide the hub on with the seal ring installed? Does the V-groove on the seal ride on the sealing washer? Which side of the v-seal faces out? Surely this is routine stuff. Can someone draw me a picture?

This has very little to do with your question. But one time 35 years ago I was traveling between Sharbot Lake, Ontario and Eaganville My front wheel berring gave up. I eased into the town of Northbrooke. So small one blink and its gone . One general gas station with a garage. I pulled in the mechinec pulled it apart had a new berring on hand an I was on my way in half an hour.I guess that the berring must have fit more than 142 Volvo. It may have been the only volvo he ever saw.

I had the same experience some months ago when I did my front wheel bearings.

I'm almost positive the correct installation is v-ring first with lip facing out. Washer covers back of inner bearing and rotates with the hub. Put the smoothest side of the washer towards the v-ring. Apply some grease to inside of v-ring lip for lubrication.

Don't get any grit into your newly greased bearings !

Later,
Al

Sounds like you did it right. So you place the seal on the stub axle first and then slid the hub on so the sealing washer contacts the skinny side of the v-ring. You said to have the smooth side of the sealing washer touch the v-ring. If it presses in to the hub like the old one did, there really isn't any choice, is there? Does my primitive drawing make sense?

I guess the forum doesn't like my stick drawing. Apparently the spaces get ignored. I'll try it again.

My experience is with 240 front hubs, but you have it right. The sealing washer is a slight force fit into the back of the hub. It is inserted with the turned up edge inserted in first. Tap it in until the flat portion is level with the inner edge of the hub (A flat piece of wood works well for this.).

The rubber seal is streached over the upper ledge, or largest diameter of the stub axle with the thin V-flap facing out. Stretch the seal onto this upper ledge, but do not push it fully onto the stub axle. Leave it proud a bit so that it is pressed inward by the sealing washer.

Wipe a thin coating of grease on both the rubber flap and the sealing washer surface.

Good luck,

Dan
