My car failed smog. They said that I need a new catalytic converter. Any tips? I'm wondering about the "direct fit" vs "universal" types, in terms of cost for the part vs labor and extra parts. Thanks!

Direct fit. For the price it's not worth farting around with a universal type.

What portion of the test failed and by how much? There are a lot of other things that could be wrong. How did they conclude that the cat was bad?

Was this a static test, or dynomometer test? State test facility or independent operator?

Check with AutoZone for a direct fit. The one for my 91 costs $99, with a lifetime over-the-counter warranty.
