Strange no start issues - 85 740 700 1985

I have an 85 740 that has been very temprimental since i took ownership of it not quite a year ago. First off, I would have intermitant no start issues. Sometimes, it would start up after trying several times, sometimes, it wouldn't start up at all. Due to being involved in long stints of travel for work, it would often sit for a month before i would get around to tinkering with it. However, when it came time for me to start it up, the car would run fine. I've been driving it regularly for the last three or four months without issue. Last week, it started up in the AM just fine, that evening as i was trying to leave work, again, no start. The engine would turn, but would never get running. Today haveing some time i thought i would start through the FAQ and see if i couldn't get it working. When i got out to the car, the battery was dead. I replaced it, figureing it was a good idea with the cold weather comming up, and low and behold, it fires right up. Is this common? Could a not so new battery cause an intermitant no start issue like this? Or am i just on another one of the cars upswings?

Any help would be apprciated, and I appologize for the bad spelling.

Here is what i can tell you.

As the engine was attempting to turn over, the tach was moving (takes care of Hall sensor being bad if i read the FAQ correctly)

I always here the 'click' of the Fuel pump relay in postion two, however i never hear any buzzing from the pumps (was going to replace the relay today just in case, but none of my local auto parts stores cary one)

* one more thing, last winter, it stalled out on me twice while turning a corner going pretty quick. Once it started back up, once it didn't. Both times my fuel was above 1/2. The car has no issues when the fuel gets down to E - so don't know if that means anything. It has not happend since.

Check your battery cables, if it just died going around the corner, electrical issue. If it sputtered, fuel issue. Oh, you're also a candidate for the engine wiring harness issue.

hi there,
If i were u i would check the hall sensor connection .. I had same kind of problems with my car and after replacing, knock sensor, fuel pump relay, radio susperission relay, and electronic ignition amplifiyer.. it ended up being the bad hall sensor connection... plastic booth that connects to dist itself was hangin down from the disp.. I ordered the booth for 2$ and changed it...It has been running good so far...

Thanks for the quick replys.

I'll check the sensor connections out this afternoon.

What should i be looking for on the batery cables? All the outside plastic/insulation seems to be intact, at least what i can see.

And the Wiring Harness... this has me fairly clueless. Where should i start looking for faults there?

Thanks again for the suggestions.
