not the fuel system after all 200 1981

I turne dthe engine over for a minute, and pulled a plug, smelled gas, so I guess that isn't the problem. I then replaced the roter cap, and coil, still no luck. any suggestions where to look next?
thanks,
casey

Well thought out procedures are on record here. A no start condition has been addressed many times. Try searches for starting, fuel, or ignition.

I'll try searching. Incidentally, it started this morning, warmed up, and died.

Since it started and died, you have an intermittent problem which is harder to trouble shoot. It could be on the gas or spark side. Check the spark as already suggested. If no spark, run a jumper wire fronm the positive battery post to terminal 15 on the coil and crank it over. If there is spark, take the fuel line loose at the engine and crank it over with the open end in a jar to check flow rate. Could be clogged fuel filter or weak pump. jp

That is a good lead, I loosened a bolt where the fuel line (post filter) goes into the k-jet apparatus, but I didn't check the rate. and I'll change the filter. hopfully that may fix it. Incidentally, both times it has died, it has been climbing a hill, and just lost power continuously over the next 1/2 mile and then wouldn't re-start. Thanks for the advice, I'm running out of ideas.

            'lost power continuously' 200 1981

This means it lacked power all the way up the hill or the power gradually dropped as you climbed the hill? Is the engine also running rough when the problem occurs like one cylinder is missing? Checking fuel pressure on a K-jetronic system requires a gauge, hoses, and valve unique to this system. Must be able to measure pressures up to 70 psi. I believe JC Whitney has a good kit for the lowest price. You may also be able to get a pressure gauge kit at a parts store but make sure it is specifically for the K-jet system, looks like the ones pictured on the K-jet websites, and can read the high pressures.

My son's 89 S-10 Blazer had a weak electric fuel pump. It would start but barely pull its own weight. Since there was gas flow and it was time to replace the plugs, cap, and rotor anyway, we did that first. It ran a tad better but obviously wasn't fixed. Removed the fuel filter and it was clear (could blow through it). Cranked it over with the filter removed and there was gas flow but it looked weak. Connected a pressure gauge to the end of the open line and cranked it again. Had 2 psi. Checked the manual and it called for 10-12 psi. Went ahead and changed the pump and that fixed the problem. I've replaced three electric fuel pumps on differnent vehicles and that's the first one that was weak. All the others were locked up or had a burnt out motor so zero fuel flow. An 83 with a B23F runs 35-40 psi of fuel pressure. Good luck. jp

Thanks, I just replaced the fuel filter and I'll check the pump pressure nexst, any Idea of a good way to test psi? and if it is a weak psi might it possibly be the tank pump? I'll check the tank pump first and then the mail one next weekend
              thanks again,

On an 83 B23F, a tee is needed in the gas supply line. You can buy a tee with the correct threads to match the Vovlo threads at the fuel rail from Parker Hanifin for around $30. I just cut the plastic fuel line near the fuel rail and inserted a 1/4" pipe tee using hose nipples and hose clamps. I screw a 1/4" pipe plug into the side outlet of the tee when I'm not checking the pressure with a gauge screwed in. You could leave the guage screwed in permenently. The plastic gas line on an 83 is a little deceiving becasue it has a 1/2" rubber hose over the plastic tubing. jp

No Fuel Rail on the K-jetronic Systems 200 1981

Each injector has an individual fuel line from a fuel distributor. System operates at 50+ psi so you don't want to open the pressure line. Check the flow in the return line near the filter were the rubber covered line connects to the steel line. Don't cut the rubber covered plastic line or you will end up replacing it.

If you're getting gas then it may be an ignition problem. Are you getting spark? (Pull a plug wire, attach it to a spare plug that you ground to the engine. Turn engine over and watch for spark.)

Does starter turn engine over easily? If yes then may be the timing belt. Watch dist.rotor or camshaft for non-movement to confirm.

      gracias,
I'm getting spark, and it started and ran for a few minutes today, (just long enought to heat up, dying on a hill) Now it turns over and doesn't even sputter. replaced the fuel filter and will look at the pumps next weekend. I'm wondering if the fuel injection system has a relay that disengages it below a certian fuel pressure, because it seems like a weak pump would allow the car to iald anyway.
      thanks,
      casey
