no brake lights 900 1992

Just bougth a 92 940. Got home and discovered that when I step on the brake no lights come on in the back: left, right or window deck light. I gave a visual check to the left and right brake bulbs. They look ok. Where is the fuse panel located? Any other thoughts on what could make all 3 inoperable?
Also, does the 940 have an infamous fuel pump relay that, like the 240, fails after 100 K miles? If yes, where is it located? Anything else I should be aware of with a 940? Thanks for your help

For stuff like this, a Volvo wiring diagram would be worth while purchase.

The fuse panel is behind the ashtray.

It is most likely but not limited to one of the following. A burned out #4 fuse, a bad switch at the brake pedal, a bad bulb out relay, and if it’s a sedan, a bad ground connection. (Wagons have two grounds, sedans have one.)

Dear Augie,

Good p.m. If all of the brake lights are out, the bulb failure relay may have failed. I take it that the burned-out bulb warning light did not come on.

This relay - a burnt orange round plastic can - is located on the relay block. It is behind the fuse block. The fuse block is behind the front center console ashtray. You will need to move the shift lever towards the rear of the car.

Press the release bar under the ashtray. Remove it.

Remove the bezel (plastic face plate) around the cigarette lighter. Pry gently on the side closest to the passenger seat. When you remove the bezel, you'll see two Philips head screws. Remove them.

You can then remove the storage tray.

All of the relays will be visible. The fuel pump relay is rectangular and white. I believe it is in the second row, on the right (the side closest to the driver's seat).

The bulb failure relay is easily identified by its color and the fact it is round.

I'd recommend getting a couple at a salvage yard. If one restores the brake lights, you know the original was bad.

You should also check the grounds for the lights. If you car is a wagon, the ground points are just under the rear edge of the carpeted side-panels of the cargo bay.

For other issues, see the FAQs. For example, if the radiator is the original, CHANGE IT NOW. 940 radiators have about an 8-year working life. The plastic gets brittle, and tends to crack and then break, where the hoses attach. When this happens, you suffer catastrophic coolant loss.

Hope some of this helps.

Enjoy your 940 - a nicely appointed armored personnel carrier!

Yours faithfully,

spook

Thanks to both you and javalon. I thought of either the fuse or the brake pedal switch, but knew nothing of the bulb failure relay. I'll start with the cheap fix, the fuse, and work towards the other items. Thanks again
