Just finished installing snow caps (post '86), got a few tips. 200

I just installed my snowcaps (got them from volvo dealer, price 14€ ~17$).
What a b**ch!
It's all very easy untill you get to the "slide the clips forward untill you hear a click" part.
I eventually managed to instaal them, here are a few tips:

- For what it's worth I put some fine (sewing machine) oil on the interacting parts.
- It's best to have someone help you: one pulls and the other presses down on top of the snow cap.
- I used a (fine) F-clamp to hook behind the sliding clip and pull it backward. Mind you I did not tighten the clamp (that would break the plastic) I just used it as a means of grip and leverage.
- You need a rediculous amount of force to click them into place.
- Watch out tha you pull the clip towards you (to the front) and downwards a bit (so you dont break off the little tab that provides a bit of grip on the clip).

Hope this is helpful to anyone.

Is there more WIND noise now? 200

Hi. I've had the snow covers on my '80, '83 and '84. I bought them all at the same time, and then discovered (realized) that wind noise increased considerably on all three cars!

Now, I've got two '93's, which have a restyled grille and, accordingly, a different snow cover (for '86-on). I was wondering if they also are better so that they don't increase wind noise. I'd love to put them on my '93's (because they were good at keeping out leaves, samara, etc., in addition to snow), but first I'd like to know about this possible noisy downside.

Looking forward to hearing about your "sound" experience.
Thanks.

Well....

For me that's difficult to answer. You see I have a '92 Diesel 240.
Since diesel engines are louder a lot of extra sound dampening material was added on by Volvo, so if you're inside of the car it's quite quiet (for a diesel).
So their are two critical factors: louder engine and better sound dampening.

But to answer your question: no I can't hear increased wind noise in the city ( at about 31 m/h) nor on the highway (at about 87 m/h).

Thanks :-) 200

Hi. I'm glad to hear that, and appreciate your answering me. I guess I'll go out and buy a couple of them now (fall - leaves; and winter - snow, are all on the way :-).
Thanks again.

My experience exactly, on the 940 vent covers. Mine came from IPD and had very poor instructions. I had to make a "special tool" to pull the clips into place, after doing some preliminary sandpaper "easing" on the latching surfaces.

This is a snowcap, it covers your air intake to prevent leaves, road debris,etc... from entering (and clogging up) the air circulation system.

The picture on this page is a pre '86 cover, later years have two smaller vents (and thus covers).
