85 740t m46 swap in 92 940t 900 1992

Hi.

I own a 1985 740 turbo with m46 transmission. The tranny has been rebuild last year, but bot the engine. It's the first generation of b230ft with the weakest engine made for this model. I was searching hard for a 940 turbo because of it's solid engine and independant suspension. But i only want manual and here in canada, and maybe anywhere, there are not available... I have search for a 740 90-91 turbo with m46 but again, cannot find one of these rare bricks! Now i've devided to buy a 92 940t and put my transmission on. I've hear transmission if bolt-on, but maybe there's something to do with the flywheel? of the drive shaft... i really don't know I'm a machinist so i can made fitting piece, as long as it's not a differential gear! There is also the brake master cylinder that i wish to put on the 940. Last thing to know is if the frame have the hole to bolt the clutch pedal! So if one here can give me some information, of part of! i'll really enjoy it. Thanks!

    85 740t m46 swap in 92 940t 900 1992

The flywheel problem crops up in these M46 swaps because the flywheel for the later B230's (flexplate on auto trans engines) has a crank angle sensor on the bellhousing which gets a signal from drilled holes (I think) in the flywheel or flexplate. This is how it triggers the ignition. Your 940 engine has the sensor. You will have to find a manual trans flywheel with the timing holes.

    Hi Weckl,

I don't know where in Canada you are, but there is this in NB: http://www.autosellermag.ca/trader/result/affich.asp?rubno=4000&r=%27ATL%27%2C%27NSC%27%2C%27NBR%27%2C%27PEI%27%2C%27NFL%27&ste=&sid=&issr=1&yfr=0&yto=0&kfr=0&kto=0&pfr=0&pto=0&dm=1&dp=4&mk=VOLVO&md=&kw=&or=0&oby=7&pg=1&vid=2115597

    Hi Weckl,

Yes, as Rob said, it can be done without *too* much pain. It's great that you have a donor car as there are probably several parts you'll need from it that you won't realize at first. I was going to switch my '91 745T to an M46 last year. I had the tranny and some other components, but I ended up not doing the swap as I didn't have the extra money to buy the clutch and a couple other new parts. Also, I figured that my perfectly working AW71 was probably ok, lol. Anyway, yeah, it's real hard to find '90-'91 740Ts with M46s. I found one ('90 745T) for sale locally reciently with 200K km for ~$3500, but I didn't have the money to buy it and I'm pretty sure it sold within a week. Wish I could have bought it. Your 940 should have provisions for a standard tranny as 940s had M46s in Europe (right up until end of production in '98 I believe). Good luck with the swap!

You'll need a flywheel from a 90 or 91 740T 5-speed. And the top of the bell housing will need to be punched out for clearance.

Otherwise the 85 will be a fine donor car. Make sure to save all the overdrive wiring and relay.

I again, thanks for the fast reply! You told me i need to make some clearance for the transmission housing. Is it where it bolts? of where the overdrive is??? In fact I'm wondering how much space i need to made. And secondly why is the 90-91 flywheel so important? It's will be a hard thing to find if I don't buy a new one! Thanks again!
