89 740 engine interchange? 700

Hello, new to the board, first post. I am new to Volvos, but not new to mechanics, i.e. lot of o.t. experience. I just bought an 89 740 wagon with a rod knock. I have a derelict '79 240 with a good motor and an '88 240 that has a good motor but of the two I would rather part out the '79. So, what options do I have here? Would the '79 crank work in the '89? Is using the '88 motor my only choice? Also if I could get a quick idiots guide to engine ID, that would be great.
Thanks in advance,
Phil

Thanks for the responses. It seems like the '88 is going to lose it's motor. As to the piston slap issue, I haven't actually heard the car run, I bought it on eBay and haven't picked it up yet, so it could very well be, but the owner made it sound pretty bad. One thing I don't quite understand though is why i would need to use the cam etc. from the '89. Arent they both LH jetronic? Or is the '89 Motronic? It seems like swappig the cam is a little scary because the buckets and cam journals will be worn to match the existing ones. Is this not a concern on this engine? The 740 is supposed to have a rebuilt head so maybe swapping the whole head is better.
    Thanks again,
    Phil

      Hi Phil,

Well, if you determine that the sound actually is rod knock and that the engine does need to be replaced then I can't see why the '88's B230 wouldn't just drop right in. You'd probably have to keep the 740's wiring harness and might have to swap a few things here and there, but I believe the fuel systems are the same. I don't know why you'd have to swap the cam, but you may have to use the bellhousing, flywheel and flywheel sensor from the 740. When my mechanic rebuilt my '91 B230FT he swaped the distributor from the back of the head to the front of the engine because it's a more simple design: Works great, I believe the distributor parts are cheaper and it can't leak oil like the rear distributor (yay!). Good luck!

    Hi Phil,

I don't mean to question your mechanical knowledge, but are you sure the '89 has rod knock? B230s are known for "piston slap" and it can get pretty noisy, especially when cold. I thought my '91 740 non-turbo had rod knock shortly after I bought it (about 352K km on it). The engine would knock (idling, accelerating) in the morning until it was at running temp. I asked my Volvo mechanic about it, he said that it's probably piston slap and that since the engine seemed find otherwise to just drive it and see if that changes. So that's what I did and it hasn't changed in almost 30K km > ~18K mi (almost 381K km now). So I guess it's piston slap. Wierd. Maybe you have totally different symptoms though. Just thought I might tell you my experience :) Oh, I did an oil change with 10W30 soon after I bought the car and 5K km later I switched it to Shell Rotella T 15W40. I've been using that in it since. Seems to really like that oil.

all 3 cranks are different, only the assemblies will interchange. but, the b21 into the 89 is a WHOLE lot of work because of the injection and ignition. your best bet is to put the 88 complete into the 89 car. use the cam and dist from the 740 and get a plug for the 88 240 block's dist hole. remove the manifolds and sensors and go for it. good luck, chuck.

While the 1979 240 has a great 2.1 liter engine, the crankshaft will not work in your 1989 car. The engine can be made to work, but you'll have to change it from K-Jetronic to LH 2.2 fuel injection.

If you want a good crankshaft, I have three in the garage. If you came by, I'd give you one.
