I am trying to diagnose a noise on my 87 245.
I had squealing belts and got it aligned last saturday and eversince the squeals are gone but when I am going at around 40+ mph I get this deep moan. It doesn't seem to be on one side or the other. It doesn't change weather the a/c is on or not.
It does vibrate in the shifterknob.

It doesn't sound cyclic like tire noise.

Any Ideers from the board?

      This just get more mysterious to me.
      It doesn't vibrate in the shifterknob exactly,
      I can feel something there and at the gas pedal

      And now all the squeaking is back to I ran the engine and stood over it
      the ac pullly is barely turning but the belt is going very fast
      and the squeak is more like a screech it crescendo's and then dies out.

        That sounds like a problem with the AC compressor and/or clutch, and would surely make for belt squeals. Suggest you start another thread on that subject, as I'm not real familiar with AC.

      Good call!

      A dry/bad CSB can make a moaning noise as well as vibration in the shifter. CSB is in the middle of the driveshaft. Do you hear the sound from underneath you? Maybe near the shifter?

    Check the plastic belly pan, and see if the mount bolts are there and tight. Good luck!

      Ok, I feel really moronic..but my Haynes shows nothing called a plastic belly pan.
      What is it, where is it?, what does it do.

        The splash pan, gravel shield, and maybe others.

        Your brick may have none, they do wear and fall off and then the car gets a "New-to-Volvo" owner. Maybe you?

        It is a large plastic piece, maybe 2 ft by 3 ft, that is carefully shaped and fits under the front part of the engine from the cross member to the radiator support bar. If you look down behind the radiator, you should NOT be able to see the ground below the car.

        If you have no such pan, get one. they protect the alternator and front engine harness and oil pan from attach of the road oils, gritties, water, gravel, etc.

        Several Brickboard advertisers will have them. I found one in a junkyard only after years of looking. If you get one without the mounting bolts, someone here will know the size and length, and what washers to use, too.

      It's been an interesting day. I haven't had time yet to check the plastic belly pan.

      But my squeaks are back and loud enough to be embarrasing. I still have the moan, too.
      The squeaks are at turns and decelerations.
      Belts were plenty tight.
      Could it be the harmonic balancer?
