Motor Mount replacement questions and suggestions? 200 1986

175K miles on the 245, tried to change the oil filter and the engine was resting on it. Luckily the filter hadn't been crushed yet and the replacement Mobile1 filter was a lot shorter so I'm not in horrible shape yet.

Got the mounts from FCP, planning on doing it Sunday. I only got the motor mounts, but after reading around I'm wondering if I need to change the transmission mount(s?) as well.

I was also told that I could use a small hydraulic jack inside the engine bay to push the engine up and sideways from the mount, making it pretty easy to change, but haven't seen anything like that on here so far. But I do have access to a regular engine hoist as well, so I'm thinking that's the way to go.

Should I expect any nasty suprises or anything like that? Any specific tips that really stand out in anybody's mind that I should know?

Thanks for the help!!!

I have a wood palette laying around. Very helpful in place of impact tools. The nuts on the motor mount and tranny mount (and possibly on the 240 tranny crossmember IIRC) are in place pretty well. Of course if you've already got a vice, that'd work just fine too.

When I did mine I printed out Dave Shannon's motor mount page (thank you Dave !), that came in very handy. I did use a bottle neck jack with a soft piece of wood in between the jack and car.

I replaced also my tranny mount. Remove the cross member there.

Jack up the engine from below the harmonic balancer using a bottle jack and a piece of soft pine wood placed under the lip of the pan. You only need to jack it up about 1/2-1 inch. Loosen the bolts forthe mount brackets from under the crossmember and take out the entire mount from the engine and crossmember with the old mount attached. It is easire when the mount is already disconnected or completely broken off, but it's a lot easier to put the new one on the brackets while in a vice. And as mentioned, do the right one first.
Put both new mounts in before attemting to remove the tranny mount and replace it.
Also I would reccomend to spend a little more and get the harder mount for a B21FT.

Yeah, someone once tried to jack up the engine by the oil pan, but didn't make a cutout or properly avoid the drain plug. Ruined oil pan, blamed the brickbord, threatened to sue.

By all means, jack up the engine, but be careful of the drain plug.

My advice: avoid the MTC mounts from FCP Groton, and do the passenger's side first. It's pretty straight forward, but tedious and messy.

I like to do it from underneath with a floor jack and a couple of jackstands. Cut and paste this into your browser

or drop by the homepage and follow the link about halfway down.
