Overdrive working overtime

My '88 240 wagon automatics overdrive will not disengage. How can I disconnect it peranently, or deactivate the overdrive, so it no longer kicks in.

What happens when the button on the left side of the gear shift handle is depressed?

What should happen is that (1)overdrive will drop out and (2)an amber arrow light should come on at the right end of the row of idiot lights on the instrument cluster.

Post back with what you get.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

Exactly the problem is I have no control over when it comes on or off. After being started the car will drive at in the normal gear for a while, then automatically switch to over drive and I have no way to disengage it. No matter how many times I push the button on the gear shift.
