speedo twitchy while stopped in drive 200 1989

Picked up an immaculately cared for 89 240 wagon. After changing the alternator and belts, the only thing I can find wrong with this car is that I'll be sitting at a stoplight in drive, and the speedo needle momentarily relives an instantaneous 0-40 or 0-60 sweep. Other than that, this thing is a tank. Any ideas?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe by 1989, the speedometer, which gets its pickup from the rear of the transmission, is fully electronic; meaning that instead of a spinning, mechanical linkage, it would simply be wire. With that in mind, how about the suggestion that somewhere between the transmission to the back of the speedo (probably under the car), there is a partial short? Anyone second this theory?

Actually the speedo pickup is mounted on the differential rear cover. But you are correct in thinking it is some kind of electrical problem. My '89 245 speedo's needle would jump as I turned the key before engaging the starter, I never took the time to figure it out.
