Trans/ clutch questions 200

I have a 1991 240. My clutch is slipping really bad, I'm putting it up on my friends lift tomorow to see if I can just adjust it to make it not as bad. where is the best place to get a new clutch. My local auto shop quoted $230. seems a little high but this is my first volvo clutch replacement. is there any places online where i could get it cheaper?

Also my transmission is starting to get really bad, second gear likes to grind at even the easiest shifting, and the syncros and bushings are totally shot. is there anywhere that sells new/ rebuilt transmissions? I havent really looked into this a ton but any feed back is great. thanks!

I would try just changing the clutch first.
I have changed several clutches on my cars 240`s and 740`s,
and they do tend to grind when the clutch is worn down.
two of mine did mostly on the reverse and they both stoped after
i changed clutch.

Trans/ clutch questions 200

I paid $500 a couple of yrs ago at an independent Volvo-oriented repair shop. They used the Sachs (original equipment supplier to Volvo) clutch kit (3pieces) and resurfaced the flywheel, along with installing a new rear crank oil seal. This is the first class way to go on this job. All-fresh OE clutch parts and a good oil seal to keep em that way.

I'd be wary of a $230 complete job from a "professional" shop. They've either underestimated the time required, or plan on elcheapo parts, or both.

Before putting a new clutch, you may want to try a few things such as

** changing tranny fluid, perhaps using RedLine synthetic fluid, and doing the overfill

** adjust pedal freeplay (under car plastic nut)

** adjust detente plate (under the rubber shifter boot)

$230 isn't bad for the parts... I'm assuming that's what the price was for.

My best recommendation is check out www.fcpgroton.com

Great prices...

Which transmission do you have? the M46 or M47... it matters.

ok, I did a little snooping around on the web. from what I understand I have the M47II (since the M47I never made it to the US) What I have also been reading is that the M46 is a stronger unit then the M47. I like having 5 gears though :\

I do a bit of racing at the track and auto crossing, does the gear ratios change from the 2 units? does the 4 speed have longer gears, or are they the same as the first 4 and then have a OD?

now im throughly confused, and is it even possiable to adjust the clutch so it dosent slip? I couldnt find a master cylander for the clutch so im hoping its cable...

Cable operated. There is an adjustment, so with luck that's your problem. If not - new clutch time. Check FCPGroton.com and Eeuroparts.com for prices for the Sachs kit, and use that info when dealing with installation shops.
