960 Cam adjustment S90-V90 1994

Has anyone played with their cam adjustment before,of course leaving the cam pulley alone. The pulley is slotted, therefore, allowing adjustment of the cams.
I can tell mine have been moved before so I tried adjusting the exhaust cam counter clockwise ever soo slightly,it stumbled just a little bit.I then turned it full clockwise and it idles smoother than ever.I haven't started to mess with the intake yet.
The only reason I'm even attemping this is the fact that the wifes 92 960 has better and smoother accelleration than my 94 and they're supposed to have indentical engines including cams.
Just seeing if anyone has tried this.I have called around to the indy shops I know and none of them have the cam alignment set-up tool.My car has not been to the dealer yet and I plan on keeping that way.

I have a copy of the volvo cam timing tool which is the same tool for all the volvo white engines. V40, 850/S/V70, and our 960/S/V/90.

Small movements of the cam often are used by tuners to optomize characteristics of a particular engine. That is one of the parameters a "dyno-tuner" has to play with.

If you have a tool to allow you to return to the basic factory setting I think you only have knowlege and fun to gain by trying it.

That said, I'll bet with the smoother idle you have less over-lap and the peak power will be reduced?????????????

DM, my green volvo rebuild manual instructs to center the bolts in the slots. I suppose with a new timing belt, there may be little, if ever so slight, stretch that moving the gears could make an improvement. Just be very careful and turn that engine over by hand just to be sure one retains the valve clearance.

Mechanically, engines as you write are pretty much identical. But the ECU's are not ('91, '92 and '93-'94 use different article numbers) and that may explain what you've noticed as well as normal production tolerances and wear. I also suspect that combustion chambers were slightly modified some year but haven't been able to verify this yet.

Nothing to be sorry about. Imagine one more year of cars with the weak timing belt mechanism and a far too long recommended change interval...
