Blower motor. 120-130

Does anyone know any tricks in getting more blowing capacity from the stock and pitifully weak 122 blower motor?

mine blows plenty strong, and in all the 120 I had they always did. Just checking but you know the first postition on the fan switch is low and the 2nd is high right (or something like that it's counter intuitive anayway). A tech tried to fail me once on a safety cause he said the fan wasn,t strong enough, as soon as I showed him the proper postion of the pull switch, no problem. So make sure the wiring is good and you should get plenty of blow, this car was designed for Sweden!

If you don't like the way the switch works, just reverse the two outboard wires at the connection to the blower.

I was able to "update" the blower motor in the current wagon restoration with success. I took the old motor to the parts shop and after much searching we found one that looked close enough...it was for a Frieghtliner Semi! ($100) The mounting holes were 2 mm more narrow so I put a washer on the outside to hide the oval hole. The stock plastic block that has all the wire connections was reattached so it looks stock except for the washers. (I may have to paint them black too, just have to look at it some more to decide). The motor had the option of being a three speed, but I just capped the low speed connection and it is med and high. It is quite a strange feeling to feel a breeze from the defrost vents in an amazon, and the rear heater ducts also produce a breeze.
Can't wait for the first frost to test it and the new heater core out.

Eric,
I like the blower motor you've described.
Could you send me a part number for the frietliner semi blower? Or do you think I should bring mine in like you did? To, where, just an autoparts store?
Thanks.
Stan

I bought a '73 164 from a rather creative fella some time ago... His wife had complained that the heater didn't heat her enough, so he went to work..

He pulled an A/C unit out of some american car, stuffed it behind the glove box, ran the engine coolant through it, and made a vent dead center of the glove box door dead center at his wife's face. THat car was warm...

Perhaps a similar thing could be done if you found the under dash part of a factory 122 A/C unit...??? Would look stock, and you'd have straight out dashboard heat... Hmmm... I could use some more heat in my 122, and I think I might have an A/C unit in my donor car...

I had my blower and heating bow removed and cleaned up a few months ago. It certainly increased the power a bit, but made it MUCH quieter.

I find that the hot blower is great in winter but the cold is inadequate in summer. The ability to swap the stock one for a modern "in-your-face" blower would be great but I have never seen this described. I suppose it would mean major cutting of the dash-board facia.

Clean the commutator.
Make sure the brushes are adequate. (replace if necessary)
Clean (lacquer thinner works well) the bearings and lube with plain
oil (NOT any kind of Penetrating oil!!!)
Make sure when reassembled that it spins freely. If it doesn't, clean
and adjust until it does.

Most heater blower motors have not had any attention in years and are low
on power because the brushes don't make good contact or the bearings are
gummed up or both. There is nothing about the power-producing part of an
electric motor that makes it get weaker with age (unlike piston engines!)
