rack and pinion seal? 700

I have a 1987 760GLE non-turbo v6. For sometime it has losing power steering fluid. Upon inspection the underside of the car, I noticed that fluid was dripping out of driver side boot that covers rack & pinion parts and the tie rod end. Boot was not secured. I pulled boot back off of the rack and pinion part and it was leaking. What is the procedure for repairing leak?

    Joel,

    The only practical way to deal with a leaking rack is to replace the rack. Rebuilt racks run about $200 bucks ... but I've salavaged a couple of fresh rebuilt racks from my local Pick and Pull for a lot less. The P&P charges about 40 bucks for a rack but one was purchased on half price day so it ran $20. Removing and replacing the steering rack is not a difficult job, certainly much easier than trying to repair leaking seals. Check 700/900 FAQ for details. Hope this helps.
