FRONT WHEEL BEARING REPLACEMENT QUESTION 200 1986

I just changed my oil for the 93rd time and poured in my 372nd quart of oil, I thought it time to check my front wheel bearings for play. I noticed a little wobble on the driver's side and the ps was ok. So I figured it's time to redo the bearings. I have 295,000 miles on my sedan and had repacked the fronts about 125,000 miles ago. I feel it's time to replace the entire inner and outer bearings and races. My manual says that I should take the assembly to a shop and have the old ones pressed out. Is there anyway a home mechanic with some moderate level of repair skill to get the old ones out myself? Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.

Thanks in advance......

Use a brass drift to tap out the bearing race. Make certain that you start the new ones in straight then tap them in. You will not damage the race with a brass drift, just do not use steel.

FRONT WHEEL BEARING REPLACEMENT QUESTION 200 1986

I seem to remember removing both front bearings for regreasing, without using a press for removal or refitting. Was I drunk at the time?

FRONT WHEEL BEARING REPLACEMENT QUESTION 200 1986

I replaced mine and it was not a hard job. It was a while ago so I don't remember exactly how I did it but I think it was the careful application of a drift. You need to get a same diameter piece of metal to hammer it in properly. I took the hub to the local shop to have them use a proper diameter metal thing.

FRONT WHEEL BEARING REPLACEMENT QUESTION 200 1986

wobble can be bearings or ball joints. I presume you worked out which it was. Seems to me last time I did this i drove out the bearings with a drift, and used a pipe or something of the correct diameter to seat the new bearing. Anyway, no harm in trying to do yourself, if you can't it's alot cheaper to go to a shop with just the bits than the whole car.

FRONT WHEEL BEARING REPLACEMENT QUESTION 200 1986

a drift to knock out old races (work your way around the race), then a big socket or something to tap in the new race. The race on the spindle shaft is not worth looking at unless you have a problem. However, my experience is that by the time a bearing is giving you a problem, you have very little time before it disintegrates. One more trick. Freeze the race & it will press into the warm hub easier.
