Dead Tranny

The transmission in 88 745 died the other day and I need to replace it. I found a used one at the local pick and pull but they need to know if it has a notched crank sensor or not. If anyone knows could they let me know. Thanks.

Your car doesn't have a notched crank sensor. No problem if the replacement does have one either. You can use a later trans in an earlier engine w/o crank sensor.

Dead Tranny 700 1988

An 88 740 does not have a crank sensor at all. You can use a trans from ANY year automatic, assuming it's the Aisin-Warner AW70 and not the ZF model 22. If your shifter says "PRND2L" and you have an overdrive switch on the side, it's the AW, you can use any 87+ trans from a 700 or 900.
The ZF has no switch, and says "PRND321" on the shifter. A bit harder trans to find.

You can use a 240 transmission as well, any 86-93 auto is an AW70. Earlier ones are not the same as they have a speedo cable hole you don't want.

Check your VIN plate- make SURE you have a 1988, not an early 1989. Production date needs to be before August of 1988. Your VIN should have a "J" in the 10th digit. A "K" is a 1989 and DOES require the crank sensor style flywheel.
Your VIN should be something like : YV1FX8845J1234567 If it's K, it's an 89.
Good luck with it! COnsider replacing the tailshaft bushing and seal while it's out, as well as the engine rear main seal.
