Does the engine miss and sputter or does it just refuse to rev up when this happens?

when this happens it does both ,sputters and back fires smells like unburnt fuel and will not rev up above an idle. then it clears up and is back to normal.

Sounding more and more like a bad cat. Hook up a gauge and check exhaust backpressure when it's misbehaving.

Have you checked the ECU for any codes?
