I have to stall my wagon by putting it into gear with brake on because it stays running when I turn off the ignition.

I looked at the stock cylinder - yikes (no getting that off). The wiring just pops off the end though, so I thought I could chop the end off and wire the 4 wires it to an aftermarket key cylinder (4 position).

Is this okay to do? There aren't a lot of 240s left in Canada from which to get parts and I hate doing the stall thing (I can hear stuff banging from the shuddering in the back).

The brown wire at the starter has a break in the insulation and is touching at the firewall somewhere, thus feeding the ignition power. Seen it happen tons of times. Well maybe not tons, but often...

It was the brown wire. Thanks Chris. I just fiddled with it and it now stops. I suppose the problem may recur, but I know it isn't the ig. I stripped the large cover jacket and the wire jacket seemed okay, especially compared to some of them by the block which were down to the wire.

If your Brick's ignition switch is the problem the electrical back end of it is removeable and replaceable. Uplug the wiring connection from the back and if you stand on your head looking under the dash ... you should find two slightly inset screws on the back side of the switch. Remove them and the back of the switch comes away. You can replace it with salvage switch back from any 75-89 200. Or you can buy a new switch back from FCP Groton (fcpgroton.com) for 35-65 bucks. Hope this helps.

Is it run-on? Where the engine chugs on roughly after turning off the key because the carb is continuing to be fed gas? If so you need to adjust your carb and idle bypass. Need instructions?

If it continues to run on smoothly, then the ignition switch is probably defective.
