Searching for a Schematic for a 240 8-track Player... Any ideas where to begin? 200 1980

Does anyone know of any place that might have any info on the early Volvo OEM radios?

I've gotten by for a good long while with out a schematic, but I could really use one right now.

While working on the radio earlier this week (details below), I accidentally severed a couple of wires, and I don't know where they are suppose to go. I'll figure out where they go, but it might end up taking me several hours with out a schematic...

Also, does anyone at least know what company actually manufactured these radios? I'm pretty certain the radio is Japanese, as there are lots of clues inside (lots of Hatachi chips inside...). If I know what company actually made these things, I might be able to get some general info about their radios from somewhere.

What I'm actually doing to the radio: I'm in the process of Servicing the radio (replacing the 26 year old belt, cleaning the tape head, etc...) and adding AM stereo to it, but I'm at somewhat of a loss. Aside from the severed wires above, I'm trying to figure out where the AM signal becomes mono so I can bypass that section and input the Stereo decoder chip.

I should add that I have done lots of work as an (assistant) radio station engineer, and I have a pretty good understanding of how radios in general work... but this unit is so old that lots of stuff is a bit different.

If anyone has even the littlest bit of info on these OEM radios old radios I'd really appreciate it. As far as I can tell the only documentation that exists on these things hasn't been seen in 30 years.

By the way, when I finish adding AM stereo to this thing, I'll post a run down on how I did it with pictures for anyone else interested in doing the conversion... Believe it or not we actually still have a couple of AM stereo radio stations in the area. (In fact, the station I work at is in AM stereo which is the main reason I'm adding it.)

Thanks as always.

Would this be the schematic that they chiseled into tablets of stone, or had they switched to papyrus rolls by then?

I have one of those, too. One dead channel in the amp. Can you fix that?

      Yes.

Is it on the tape player, or on both the Radio and tape?

If it's just the tape player, it's most likely a bad tape head. I had to replace the one I had in mine. The left channel of audio on the tape came and went with a noise that sounded like water in your ear.

If you want more details on how to fix that, I can post them.

If it's on both the radio and tape play back, it's probably a bad capacitor on the amp board, which is located on the left side of the stereo (when looking at it from the front). Follow the wires coming off the tape head, that's the amp board.

These radios have really nice wide band AM radios in them, which makes music sound really good compared to a newer AM radio with the "talk" filters. It's one of the reasons I decided to convert to AM stereo. It will sound pretty amazing actually (for an AM radio).

Dylan, this is a kind of long shot. See if you can recognize any of these numbers from a label on your machine. This is a scan of the entire Volvo section of an old Sams index I have. The "AR" books are Howard W. Sams publications Auto Radio series. If you can figure out which AR book it might be in, the next step is to locate one. What did we do before search engines??

    Good luck!
