Post Plugged Catalytic; 91 940 Turbo wont even start and run more than a few sec. 900 1991

I ran my 91 Volvo 940 Turbo (IPD Turbo Cam with APC) with a clogged catalytic converter last week and I really put a bad strain on it. Towards the end the engine was in quite some pain and stress and the converter must have been red. I was forced to drive some 120 miles like this on the Turnpike and uphill and the engine was wheezing and bucking near the end. (For the first 50 miles she ran smoothly enough as long as I kept the speed down to 50 and the boost gauge to 0.)

I am waiting for my new hi performance catalytic converter to arrive. Meanwhile, I was curious and I cored out the guts of the old one so that it is hollow. This was just so I could get the car started to work on it and to see if I got a HP increase.

To my utter amazement I cannot get the car to start and run. It does start once in a while and I can keep it running in Park for awhile and then it stalls out. So I guess Fuel and Spark are okay, its just the Computer that’s giving me grief.

I reset the onboard ODBC 1. I pulled a 2-3-2 code off of it, but now its al 1-1-1’s on Pin 2.

What is going on? Why can’t I make my car run? Is it because the cored out Catalytic fools the computer?

just a thought... if the cat had broken up inside it MAY have shot a load of crap back in to the rest of the pipes...and you may have a secondary blockage....

try leaving the cat disconected at its back and startign the car up...ok it WILL be noisey but it might run...if it does then its something further back in the system...

Do you have oxygen sensors on your cat? It's possible the heat fried it or them with the result that the wrong amount of fuel is being metered into the injectors. Just a guess from an amateur wrench who knows just enough to be dangerous.

Your current no-start symptoms are consistent with a failed AMM. I would be very interested to know if your engine will start and run in "limp home" mode which you can force by disconnecting the plug from the AMM (ignition should be off when you do this) and then attempting to start and run the engine. If it starts and runs (albeit poorly) then the AMM is the primary suspect. Although it doesn't totally make sense to me how this would happen, perhaps when the cat was plugged you had excessive heat build up in the turbo and under the hood and managed to cook the AMM.

I sure would like to see the answer to this one as I was considering removing my rusty cat and substituting a piece of pipe.better wait and see what your prob is.Hope someone helps soon and your lump is OK.
Sounds a bit like my Chrysler (Vauhall Omega) when the cat collapsed would only just tickover, and difficult to start but that was because the exhaust couldn't escape, not the opposite, straight through. Are you sure you reamed it through?

been there done that...my cat is now a peice of custom made straight through pipe - runs just fine no issues at all!

in fact runs quite a bit better - but that could also be to d owith a slightly moded air intake, non return presure valve on the thetick over falme trap scavenger pipe, oil trap on same and one or two other little mods here and there...
