fixed alternator, found the wires 200 1981

I had the temp sensor on the starter... dumbass. Found the temp sensor, but I probably damaged the gauge, which reports rather higher now. Not sure if this is from improved system charging from new alternator brushes, or from the high voltage smoking and burning it got this afternoon...

I am happy to report that not once did I wish I had taken it to a dealer for a $1000 rip off replacement job. Thanks to everyone here; this is my new fave www spot (I've only had the wagon for less than 2 months).

    Isn't this a great site?
You can test the temp guage as follows:
    1. Remove the wire from the temp sensor and ground it to the engine. Turn on the ignition and the guage should read at the top of the scale. If it doesn't, the guage and/or the wiring is bad.

    2. Get a 68 ohm resistor from Radio Shack and connect it from the sensor wire to ground. Turn on the ignotion. The temp guage should read about 3/4 scale.

I wouldn't be surprised if the guage turned out to be ok. The guage power is set by a 10 volt regulator in the instrument cluster and you probably gave it 12 to 14 volts. They are fairly rugged.

If the temp guage is off too much, you can probably get one at a pick and pull very cheaply.
