opinion needed 740Turbo intercooler 700 1986

Hi all,
I'm looking into repalcing my jetta 91 with something else and saw one volvo 1986 740turbo intercooler. The cars looks good from outside, inside ok but the leather seats are worn out...however when we took it for a ride it seams very weak. No power when tried to accelerate, the turbo gauge moves to the middle on the yellow but the car just slowy accelerates. The owner says it is the turbo that needs to be replaced. I was reading on the formus that when the turbo goes then I should probably see some smoke, but there wasn't any. Is it really worth it to even try to buy and fix it?
P.S. the car has 155 000 km or m not sure now.

Myine had the same problem, it turned out to be the AMM ( Mass Air Flow). It is the sensor in between the airbox and the Turbo inlet. You could also have a collapsing turbo inlet hose( see if it is really soft)

I have recently had a drop in HP due to oil in idle motor. Pull the connector plug off the idle motor and see if it's oily in there. I blew mine out with carb cleaner and it regained power. The three wires are sending signals directly to the ECU. The oil must have been preventing the correct signal to mix the fuel to air. Might be worth a try.

The worst scenario is turbo replacement. The car could have a disconnected wastegate actuator rod, a bad induction hose, a plugged catalytic convertor, or something else.

If you make an offer, make it on the worst case repair.

Thanks for the info. I do have one question, if the turbo is not working, I mean broken, would the gauge move at all or would just stay at the beginning? In this car it moves to the middle of yellow when you step on the accelelator. If it moves then it means that the turbo is working?
thanx,
JF

Doesn't the yellow indicate positive manifold pressure? If so, the turbo is working to some degree.
