Brother in law's brick needs help 200

I got a call from my brother in law this morning who recently gave up:
1. His computer access
2. His towing coverage
Subsequently, his '93 245 died about 30 miles away from here and he can't access the brickboard. He gave me the symptoms, and to me the most likely culprit is the alternator. I'd like to know what you all think.

The car drove well on two recent longer trips. He got in it yesterday and none of the dashboard instruments (clock, water temp, idiot lights, etc.) worked. He started driving and the radio cut out. About 20 minutes later the engine started stuttering and then died. After a jump he was able to drive it about a mile, then it died again. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Kurt

Check grounds, check wiring integrity. It may just be a subcomponent of the alternator, which has caused charging to stop being adequate. In my recent experience, "alternator" is like "car", which is probably fine except for that one thing causing it to not work. An honest auto electrical shop will fix it for much less than a "new" (which is just a fixed up and shiny) alternator. Hope this helps.
