Ignition Coils 900 1996

Afternoon,

I was working under the hood, trying to get the engine block cover to fit properly. I messed around with the rubber seal in the back and it fit it properly after some work.

When I went back and started the engine, it started to shake. My first guess was that the wires (I'm not sure what these wires are called, ignition coils?)going in to the voltage regulator were at fault. I noticed they were very brittle and did not seem secure (I actually noticed it when I changed spark plugs, NGKs 2000s miles ago). Again, I assumed it was the last one (closest to the cabin). I detached the wire and its plug from the regulator, restarted the engine, and I noticed the engine was still shaking as it had before. I also noticed that the plastic blue plug came off the coil easily.

My question is, can I get these wires and replace them myself (Unplug old and plug in new?)? They don't look like something expensive (or are they)? Is this the ignition coil?

Additional information: 1 The regulators seem new and in good condition, they might have been changed before I bought the car 3months ago. 2 Regarding the plugs that go into the regulators, the back two are blue, the front 4 are dark gray (the grey ones were probably chages recently, the blue ones do look older).

I went through the FAQ, and read about the suggestion regarding the ohms meter. I don't have one, and I'm pretty sure its the one in the back. I also remember someone with a similar problem with brittle wires, I can't seem to find it.

Thanks in advance for any help!

If you're going to try to repair the thing, you'll really need to pick up an ohmmeter to test your repairs. also to see which wire is bad, you'll also need a wire diagram.
The wires can be replaced seperately with some delecate work( but you may trash more while wiggling everything around), otherwise finding a good harness at the boneyard and splicing it in at the head, or replacing the whole thing would be best( if splicing it in, stagger the wire cuts to make re-connecting easier )

I suppose in a jam, you could cut the single offending wire at both ends and feed a replacement through and splice it in as a quick fix

      robert,

thanks for your tips, I just came back from another look under the hood so I can see what I'll be getting from the dealer (I couldn't find anything similar to what I was looking for on the internet). But appearantly, all I'm looking for is the blue casing for the two metal poles going into the coil. The wax in the that casing has crumbled and I can't get the metal wires through. Its pretty small and seems cheap. I don't know if the dealer would sell something that small, and I don't know of any junk yards near by (i'm in houston if any one has any suggestions).

I know its the blue plug because when unpluged completely, the engine shakes as it is plugged. I then removed the casing and cleaned the crumbled wax off, plugged the wires in bare (green wire to my right the same as others). Test start and it worked fine. I wrapped them in a little electrical tape, and I'll visit the local dealer to see how they sell the wax tubes & blue case, and if i have to buy new spark plug wires (pain & more $).

thanks again for the help, I hope this wraps things up and might help someone out later.
      Al

        Part # 's from the faq's:
        http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/960_90Info.htm#960EngineStallsandWontRestartWiringHarness

"Coil Pack Connectors: [Tip from Rafael Riverol] If you have a 960, I please take off the plastic cover atop the engine that reads "24 valves" and examine the female connectors at each of the six coils. I suspect you will likely find crumbling insulation, brittle barrels and poor connections. I can tell you these can fail you anytime. You will also likely find crumbling wire sleeves that will allow wire chaffing againt the engine head. Parts Source: [John Randstrom] Borton Volvo gave me this Volvo part #3523813 (List $6.10ea, net $2.76) as the replacement ignition coil female terminals for my '93 960. These have the rubber isolators on them. You need two per housing. The connector socket housing Volvo part # 9144275-6 is $1.25 Experience with Radio Shack and other sources is not good: the female connectors de-tension and fail to maintain contact."

for now, i think i'll only need the rubber isolators. the wires and coils look pretty good. All i'll need to do is fit the isolator on the both terminals and i should be fine... i might even get some extra and change the rest of them.

your last post will help a lot when I get to the Volvo dealership, regarding the part numbers.

          Thanks again
          Al
