help with weird throbbing sound 200 1983

my recently purchased 1983 wagon has started making the oddest "throbbing" sound in the past few days. it must have crept up on me or something, but it's almost like hearing someone else's very loud bass nearby...
this only happens in drive, and most noticably at stoplights etc while idling. it goes away in park or nuetral. had someone hold down the break with the hood up and we took turns listening -- it's not coming from the engine. thought maybe the fuel pump but it's not coming from back there either. must be right under the car because it's loudest IN the car.
anyone know what going on?
