can i change the m-47 trans,in my driveway,do i need to pull the engine?

my wife's 90 245 5 speed is making some weird noises ,are these transmissions noted for their endurance? I have another transmission to exchange the original, the clutch has already been done but it still makes a clinking /clunking sound that stops when the clutch is pushed in.... any suggestions, ? ...blessings..kris

You can change the transmission in the driveway without special tools or pulling the engine. The biggest stinker in the whole deal might be taking the shifter off. Once that is done the job is pure physics and getting the car high enough to slide bulky things underneath it. The noises that I would associate with a toasted transmission are more like whines and grinding. Clinks and clunks may be bushings or mounts. Maybe not, but worth checking out before you tackle anything ambitous. Eh?
