car dies after shift into second 200 1983

The beast is a '83 242 Turbo. It was driving normally just prior and after a stop sign it conked out as I shifted from 1st to 2nd. It will not restart. It cranks, but to no avail. Strange it would just stall like that. All the hoses are tight. I checked the timing belt: the cam moves as I turn the crank bolt. Swapped in a different fuel pump realy, but no change. Fuses are good. Swapped in an old coil; no difference. Plugs are not fouled. The car is still stranded so I have been unable to do further work.
I've had this car since March and have been getting up to speed so all tune up items are new except the timming belt. The only problem with the car is that it runs very rich (smoke and hesitation) for the first minute or two. Otherwise it runs quite well.
Anyone have a similar situation occur? Thanks for any help.

may have solved it BUT........ 200 1983

OK, while checking the routine stuff I found that the gound on the fuel pump had come off. There is a another problem, however, and I feel pretty stupid about this one. Last night, in the dark, I swapped in a known-good fp relay just to make sure. The problem is that I somehow put the relay on with only four connectors making contact and turned the damned ignition key. No more instrument panel lights! What the hell did I do? Electrical is not my strong suit... The car still cranks just as it did. No blown fuses. Even with the fuel pummp connected the car will not start. Does the fuel circuit go through the instrument panel?

      Do you have spark?

Which instrument panel lights, warning or illumination?

        solved 200 1983

I need to get my eyes checked. I swapped out the #13 fuse and all is good. It pays to check the simple stuff first. Make sure everthing is connected and work from there.

        thanks for everyones advice!

          solved 200 1983

I'm glad it worked that way for you. So the original trouble was the fuel pump ground wire? Was it corroded off or just come loose?

            solved 200 1983

Yes, the original trouble was the fuel pump ground. It had just come loose. The 'jerk' from shifting gears must have finally caused it to separate from the pump. Even when I reconnected it didn't feel very tight, so I have to think about making the connection a little stronger.

I had the same issue on my 82 K-jet. The following post is very helpful. I know since this happened to me.

If your running the original wiring harness, try starting it with a jumper wire run from the positive battery post to the coil, terminal 15. You'll want to do this for sure if you determine there is no spark. A cool tool for checking spark is an inline spark tester. It goes between a plug wire and the plug and has a clear plastic tube section where you can see the spark jump a gap if the ignition system is working. Cost is $3 and up (key "spark tester" into a search engine to see the various types available). When you check the fuses, be sure to check the 25 amp blade fuse carefully because the element will crack but not burn and cracks are hard to see. Be sure the rest of the fuses are clean (corrosion free) on the ends. jp

    Ben,

If the hoses are good and you have spark and fuel, it may be the vacuum delay valve near the distributor (about the size of a quarter, 1/2 inch thick, black on one side and grey on the other). When mine went bad, it caused very rich condition on start-up until the car warmed up. When warm, it sometimes caused a rich (flooded) no-start. Check pages 240-17/18 in Bentley manual.

    Hope this helps!

I have probably swapped in four or five junkyard vacuum delay valves in the last couple of months. None of them have helped. I suspect the CPR might be a bit off as the outside temp. greatly affects the amount of trouble I get. Above 15c there is usually no problem. Along with the rich warm up, I get the fluctuating idle as well. If I 'create' a vacuum leak all is well.

      thanks

The big question in my mind is "do you have spark?"

Then, having spark, I'd wonder "do you have fuel?"

Yes, the same thing happened to me going from 1st into 2nd in an 83 242 Ti. But you said all your hoses are on, so it wasn't the same cause.

Post back if you need help with those big questions above...

Yes, when I first got the Turbo I was not careful tightening the intercooler hoses, one popped off and the car, of course, stalled. I thought for sure this happened to me again, but all hoses are snug.
When I get it home tomorrow I will check for spark, and will get some starting fluid to check for fuel.

      thanks
