AW71 Overdrive switch question 700 1991

My 1991 745 turbo has the overdrive switch on the shifter, and when I depress it, the light (orange arrow) goes on, but when I am driving, it actually has no effect. I notice that when I depress the switch and the light goes on I do not hear any relay click...could the light be good but the relay be bad? The car automatically goes into overdrive, but I am not able to turn it off (not that I really need to - I just want everything to work the way it is supposed to).

Thanks.

the relay is probably bad or it's been bypassed. the relay powers both the light and the solenoid on 2 different wires. only way to tell if the solenoid is being controlled by the switch and relay is to listen for the solenoid with the car off, driver's door open and the door chime shut up. it has a deep click, close to a clunk. if no click and you have od, the od solenoid has been bypassed. if you have a click and the light is iffy, then you need a relay. because the relay will quit on the solenoid, too. good luck, chuck.
