Balance belt whine; 1990 740 16 valve 700

Recently replaced the balance shaft belt and timing belt. Now I get a distinct high pitched whine that I am sure is from the balance belt. The car was bought recently so I don't know how the B234f should sound. I've read all the FAQs and D stevens stuff on this topic(very helpful) but still not sure how tight the balance belt should be. Does the whine indicate too loose, too tight or just right? No access to the $500 Volvo tool. Car runs well.

they way i adjust them is with the car running. take a 22 open wrench and move it slightly after the hold down is just loose enough for the adjuster to move. then start the car. let it idle. move the 22 just enough to quiet the belt and make sure it's not bouncing. go slow, and don't let anything into the belt drive. or, you can start and shut off the engine as many times as it takes. good luck, chuck.

Note whether the whine is 100% of the time of not. If it sporatically ON/OFF, then it could very well be a tensioner bearing or something.... Something to really take note of.

As far as I know, the balance shaft belt should be relatively lose. I have heard that you can just adjust it with the car running.... but that can be VERY dangerous.... please take caution.

I have a 90' 740 with a b234 and some whine is normal, especially when hot,I did find over the years that a round tooth belt whines more than a square tooth balance belt. The "Beck Arnley" belt whines alot,"IPS" in Boise Idaho sells a belt that is relatively quiet.
