960 Engine Swap 900

I've seen a '92 960 going cheap - needs new engine. Now I have a 88 240, great engine, but needs new body (rear accident damage). So is it possible to swap out the 2.9l 24v/auto box and replace with my 2.3l 8v/man box(B230FB, Bosch Inj)? It's just a thought and the idea of a 960 wagon for a couple of hundred dollars somewhat appeals to me...

Thanks

    960 Engine Swap 900

The 1991 940 SE was a B230ft in a 960 body. It was automatic only in north america. A 960 is just a 760 with a big butt and they had manual 760 turbos in Europe so I imagine it would fit. Getting the electics to work would be another story. The overdrive relays are different as well as all the electronics. The 960 has motronic, a very sophisticated fuel system. I would guess the easiest thing to do would be to use all the wiring harnesses from the donor motor. The only problem with that would be the fuel pump switching and possibly other fuel (ECU) problems. A B230 in a 960 would also be dog slow. The 960 was a few hundred punds heavier, mostly form the multilink suspension and the extra 20 litres of fuel capacity. The 960 had 80 litres (21 gallons versus 60 litres about 15 gallons). I think it would be about 300 punds heavier, and the engines are about the same weight cast iron four cylinder block versus aluminum six cylinder. The moonroof power seats etc add a few punds. The 760 turbo was heavier than the 740 by about the same 200 to 300 pounds.

    960 Engine Swap 900

Indeed the '91-94 (inclusive) 964 and 965 were fitted with B230FT or B230GT engines and M46 or AW71 transmissions. I believe that you could only get these engines/transmissions in Europe or other markets but not in the USA. The B230Gs were designed to run on leaded fuels. You might want to do some further research into this project by buying Volvo TP 0302207 the little pocket booklet for 700,900, S/V90, S/V/C70, and 850. Lots of great information you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else (was $15.95). Volvo TP @ 1-800-25VOLVO. Keep us posted on your decision/progress!

    960 Engine Swap 900

It would be a lot easier I think, if the donor car was a 700 or 900 series. I'd guess that many of the misc. parts such as motor mounts, transmission mount etc won't be usable because the 200 and 700/900 were so different.

Unless your donor is a turbo, the extra weight of the 960's sound deading etc. will make the car seem very slooooow.

I would sell the parts for your 200 as there are many people trying to keep those cars going cheaply and use the $.$$ to get a used real 960 engine if you really want the 960.

    960 Engine Swap 900

Almost anything is possiable and I have been told that the 900s used the B230 turbo one year but I wouldn't count on that and motor swaps are never an easy job. Since both these motors are F.I. you will have to change engine control computers and wireing as well as plumbing. All in all don't try it unless you have the aid of someone who has done this swap successfuly or are looking for knoeledge that you will probebly never use agin. My suggestion is sell the 240 with B230 and use the profit to buy a good used motor that's made to fit an early 90s 900. If your B230 is a turbo I may want to buy it. Before baging the project talk it over with a Volvo guru that has more experance with the 900s as I'm more of a 140 / 240 / 700 fan. In any case Best of luck and if you do go ahead with the project keep me posted on how it goes.
