1986 volvo 240dl cold start/idle problems 200

Daughter's 1986 volvo 240dl station wagon starts easy enough, but will not idle when cold. Seems to run fine after it warms up. Equipped with (if I have it right) the LH 2.2 Jetronic system with idle control valve and idle bypass screw ( not cold injector). Grounding the blue/white test wire which closes the air control valve kills the car.
What direction do I want to go?

well, of course, the car should not die with the idle air control valve closed, so what you need to do is to set the "base idle" speed to 700-800 rpm. Do that by grounding the IAC wire, then opening (unscrewing) the idle air bypass screw on the throttle body (knurled knob) to get sufficient air past the closed throttle plate to allow the engine to run.
