5-minute drive: 240 or S90?

It finally happened, I got a condo 1.5 mi. from work. So which one would you vote for as the car to take where the engine hasn't warmed up completely? Biking may be an option, but the cold weather is coming shortly. Whichever I choose, the car will get regular weekend runs on the freeway.

Thanks.

IMHO, the older red blocks take abuse better than later cars. They're apt to be much more affordable too. :)

Isn't it unconstitutional to walk?

Seriously, the commute is going down from 50 miles to near 0(primarily S90 up to now). I'm also thinking of a (1) scooter, (2) beater 245 wagon(helps with moving too), (3) synthetic oil + 240, simply because the heater warms up in half the time compared to the S90.

I should have mentioned that I'd be walking/biking on 2-lane connector roads w/o shoulders, so the potential headline "Multiple Volvo Pedestrian Hit by Rush Hour Traffic" doesn't appeal to me.

Dunno about unconstitutional, but in parts of this country, they sure make it seem that way. Between where I live and work (5 miles), I go up one road that's 3 lanes of traffic each way, no sidewalks, and no bus service directly connecting each end. Also, 55mph speed limit, so I certainly don't want to try a scooter either.

Synthetic oil definitely helps, but for this, even regular oil changed regularly ought to work out. Again, the red blocks take this much better.

1. walk
2. use the more up-to-date car (S-90); it is probably better equipped to deal with the short hops, and make sure you are using synthetic oil to prevent the wear that comes from driving mostly short trips

Respectfully disagree. If you can't/won't walk 1.5 miles to work, get the cheapest, nastiest hunk o' crap you can find.

Why would you treat any decent car like that? If you are gonna beat on a car (and driving 1.5 miles is LOUSY for a car), go get a $300 240.

Ahh, Evan, your outrage shows what loyalty you feel toward these RWD machines. Now I will cringe even moreso when I have to move or swap driveway positions without the time to get the oil a'boiling. It would be a sad way to treat a car.

It is quite a conundrum Lavesh poses considering there may often be factors against walking besides weather, e.g. health, safety... But living so close to work might create some ride-sharing opportunities that weren't previously practical.

BTW - I've set a record recently getting to and from work nine times without visiting the gas pump. My daily trip is 100 miles. But now I have 3 240s to fill;-)
