Ignition Module problem 700

'90 740 GLE 16-valve engine shows all the classic symptoms of a failing ignition module, per the FAQ. Car runs fine and suddenly the engine quits with no warning. After a rest period, it cranks fine.

Two questions: 1) I'm assuming a high probability that it's the ignition module. Before I spring for the cost of a new one, what are the chances that it could be something else? Is there a way to verify that it's the module?

And 2) FCP Groton has a Bosch ignition module with the same part number showing on mine for $65. They also show an aftermarket brand (HUGO) for $39. Is there any reason to spend the extra $$$ for the Bosch unit?

Thanks for any and all comments and suggestions.

Robert

    Ignition Module problem 700

When it quicks watch the tach. If it drops suddenly it's either the RPM sensor or the ignition module or the power stage. Then, try cranking and listen for fuel pumps. If silent, it's likely the RPM sensor. If pumps run it could be the module, but it could also be the power stage IMO. The power stage will have a square wave going into it if the module is working - but that needs test equipment i.e. a scope. In this case the power stage is faulty (assuming tach is dead). Regards.

when the car stalls, have someone crank it while you hold an injector in your fingers. if the car has no spark but you feel the injectors opening, it needs a module. if the injectors don't open, plus you have no spark, then you the speed sensor on the top of the trans.

spend the money, the hucos are junk. you'll be buying another module in less than a year. good luck, chuck.
