Posi 3:53 or non-posi 3:73 rear end which would you choose? (245 B23E) 200

Hey all,
The car I am working on my restoration project swap with has turned up a nice surprise in it's rear end. Turns out the donated shell has a 3:53 posi rear end with about 120,000kms on it. The rear end in the original car that I was transplanting over has a 3:73 non-posi rear end in it.
I am pretty certain that I am going with the posi-rear end and taller gears, but I want to hear the brickboards thoughts on posi-rear ends and any experiences?

Cheers,
Phil

PS I finally have some more pictures of the torn down old car, and the new shell that it is going into, I will updated my website in the coming days, and will post when it's ready to go!

newbie question:

My 81 DL wagon B21A was on a hoist 2 days ago. When I spun the back wheel, the other one spun too. Does this mean there is an LSD or posi there? I haven't had it for a winter yet, so I don't know if only one wheel spins.

Hey,

Probably not an LSD. If it took a lot of effort to turn a wheel (handbrake off), maybe (i have no personal experience with them), but with a normal diff, if you turn one wheel, the other will rotate in the opposite direction. Also, with the motor still, both wheels may never be turned in the same direction.

I put a 3.73 LSD in the '83 242Ti "flathood" and it is fabulous. I like the compromise 3.73, plenty of propulsion and nice cruising too. At the time, I was told they could easily order gears to change it to any ratio, rather cheaply. Sooo, either ratio is fine but use the LSD!

I'm pretty sure the 3.54 uses a different carrier than the 3.73; the ratios aren't that much different, as you say, so definitely go fot the LSD.
