240 DL wheel bearings 200 1991

1991 240 DL 150k.

I am in the process of changing the front wheel bearings. My car has seperate wheel hubs not the integrated hub/rotor. I found that the brand new inner seal washer that goes over the inner bearing is not a tight enough fit to be pressed in? I am not sure how this could be. The question is, how important is it that the washer is indeed pressed in and does not rotate?

Someone may have sold you a set of earlier style bearings. They are a smaller diameter bearing retainer/spacer ring (the seal is the rubber part that goes on the spindle). The changeover was around 6/81.

It should not move. It provides the mating surface for the grease seal. If it is "spinning" it will eventually grind itself to bits, and allow water to enter the bearing and grease to escape, significantly reduce bearing service life.

Get a new one.
