1983 245, does it have B21F or B23F? 200 1983

My friend has a 1983 245, and while getting some parts at Pepboys, the computer asked if it was a B21 or B23 engine (as aparently the distributor cap is different?). I assumed it was a B21 like mine, but did 83 models come with either engine, or is it a B23? How can I tell what engine it is? Thanks!

Jason

    The turbo cars of that year had a B21FT. Non turbo would be a B23F. The emissions compliance sticker is the absolute proof as John points out.

    Yes - check out the dist. situation: there were two variants like jp says. Our 83 (244DL with manual/OD) has the white cap "Volvo-Chrysler" unit. These have a dubious reputation, but ours has been trouble-free for the 21 yrs we've had the car.

    Since "distributor" is mentioned in your engine model question, be aware that B23F's use two different types of distributors. The "white cap" is the Crysler type and the "brown cap" is the Bosch type. I'm not sure it is a hard and fast rule but it seems the white cap was used on the GL models and the brown cap on the DL models. Often, the brown cap has been replaced with a black "after market" cap. jp

    If you are in North America, and the car is normally aspirated, the car has a B23F engine. The car will have a sticker just like this one under the hood;

    Notice the engine displacement is 141 cubic inches, which is 2.3 liters.

    The underhood sticker is on the 1983 244 that we used to own.

    Jason,

    Yes, 1983 models did come wih either engine, but the B21 was only for the Turbo model (B21FT). VLVworld has a nice chart of engine specs: http://www.vlvworld.com/index.html?engspecs.html
