I just bought a 244DL... 200 1990

I already own a 1997 855GLT and a 1993 940.
I need advice on becoming the 3rd owner of a 240 DL, 189,000mi, car is in good condition except for following:

1.) When I brake around either a left or right, bumped, turn, 5-10 mph, there is a clunk sound that comes from the rear suspension.

How can I test the car to identify the clunk while on the road or still while on jacks in my garage?

2.) Moon roof is not functioning. Is there a FAQs on this as there is with the 700-900 series?

3.) Can I go to synthetic oils? The car has only had the top end done at 165000 miles, the low end has never been rebuilt.

2. Blown fuse? Start with the simplest possible solution first...

Then I'd check out the wiring. Loose wires etc.

Not much here on s/m roof issues. Most 240's don't have s/m roofs. Try the 700/900 FAQ, bet the roof setup you have is similar to one of those models.

Finally, try Bentley or a Volvo service manual. My Haynes has nothing on elec. roofs, I was just in there today following the procedure for adjusting my roof....

Check the rear trailing arms where they bolt to the bottom of the rear axle. There should be rubber in those bushings. If the rubber is half or all gone, you need new bushings. This is a common problem. Bushing are cheap, if you get the original rubber style, but require a special tool to press out the sleeves from the axle. You can spend more and get poly bushing which do not require this tool, as they utilize the outer sleeves from the original bushings.

I replaced my bushings a couple of months ago with polys. You just have to burn out the old rubber with an inexpensive propane torch, and use a wire wheel on a drill to clean out the outer sleeve before you put the new bushings in.

I am definitely not into buying tools, sounds like the best approach. I read on another article that going poly here also does not transmit any more noise to the car-this sounds good too.
Appreciated,

189,000 is moderate milage for the venerable B230. Synthetic will essentially stop the engine-wear clock on this machine. It won't get any worse, but won't get any better (as far as wear goes). If you want to keep it for another 100,000+ go synthetic.

1. You may have worn-out bushings. Other posters will be able to establish the exact problem and provide suggestions.

2. If by moonroof, you mean a sunroof that has some sort of see-through covering, in addition to a "hard" cover, then it's not a stock Volvo moonroof. I've inquired into the sunroofs that were offered, and as far as I know, none of the sedans were given moonroofs at the factory (if it's different I'd like to know). My GL sedan has just a normal sunroof--it's either open or closed, allowing the weather in or keeping it out. As for the wagons, they did not get sunroofs at all. If you see a wagon with a sunroof, it's unquestionably aftermarket.

3. Sure, you can go to synthetic oils. Make sure you take it slow so that the engine isn't given a whole bunch of totally different stuff all at once. However, I'd question whether it's really necessary. It's my understanding that if you regularly do the oil changes, every 3,000 miles, then regular oil will work just as well. If you're anticipating a longer time between oil changes, then synthetic might be smart, but that shouldn't be the case if you're using the car as a daily driver.

Thank you for the advice.
I am going to go with Castrol GTX 10-40 oil.
As for the electric Moon roof on this sedan, it is a factory sunroof with a reflective clear glass plate instead of a body colored sheet metal, a sliding internal headliner door that slides, similar to the unit in my 97 850GLT wagon.

Have a 90 with a sunroof. Regular sliding variety. Yours is the first I've ever heard of with the glass panel, electric and a sliding headliner. If this is really a factory roof, you have a rare car indeed!
