Bad Alternator: warning light stays on after ignition key is off... 200 1983

Hi!,

My symptoms are:

- The in-dash battery warning light stays on after ignition is turned off.
- Warning light goes from very faint to off, with engine running.

Did this test:

- Disconnect neg. battery cable
- Put test light between cable and post.

Result: Test light stays on until I disconnect alt harness.

That's how I concluded bad diodes.

Opinions??

Thanks,

Edwin

Could be a bad diode, but you at least have a couple good diodes given the alternator appears to be charging with the engine running. More likely, though, the problem is in the infamous biodegradable harness part of which includes some of the lighter gauge alternator wiring. Is that the original harness?

All of us with '83's have struggled with and replaced this harness. It is very easy to replace, a wire at a time, just takes a lot of time!

      Thank you by your answer!,
Today on a service shop change the diode pack of the alternator and now everything works fine!

      Edwin
