960 won't start, electrical system dies upon turning the key 900 1996

I got in my 1996 960 tonight, inserted the key, turned it, and heard a click, and everything electrical died... down to the dome lights and door bing! I sat and left the key in for a minute and the interior lights came back on, but when I turned the key to attempt to start the car again, everything went out again! Even the power to the radio went out so that it is prompting me for the code. I was thinking it may be the key switch, but would EVERYTHING electrical die in that case? Is there a main breaker for the battery? I am completely stumped. Help!

Could your battery be dead? How old is it? If that is not it, the next thing I would look into is the terminals at the battery, inspect the cables too for corrosion in the wiring itself. Then on to the main grounding points.

Feeling kinda silly. Battery connections looked ok, but I cleaned them anyway (just in case) and now it works. Thanks...

Battery has lots of juice, and the cables are fine. The click is the starter acting like it wants to start. I can hear some sparking around the main fuse box right by the battery, but all the fuses are still good.
