What is this part and why is it leaking?? 200

My '89 245 has a tranny fluid leak coming from one or two pipelines that run up from the tranny toward the front of the car. there is a bracket type thing that seems to secure the lines...its located between the oil pan and tranny pan and the fluid seems to leak right off the bolt on the bracket. Does this bracket connect two seperate lines?...b/c that would make more sense for them to leak. Any insights?

Thx in advance,

-Phil

This happened to me on an old '83 that I used to have. The bracket holding the lines is supposed to have a pad to avoid metal to metal contact -- it wore away, and then wore a hole one of the lines.
Replace the line, but don't forget to add a pad to cushion the lines and prevent a recurrence.

Phil, I had a similar leak in my 86 245. If I remember correctly, it was some type of linkage connection that wears out. it was +$100-150 repair work and no leaks so far.

the 92 245 i just bought with 136k+ mi has the tranny leak, which I knew when I bought it. i need to get some other things fixed up first.

regards,

Do a search, because I had the same leak in one of my transmission cooler lines. As explained to me, the leak develops from the vibration of the cooler lines against the bracked that holds them in place. I tried to repair the lines with JB weldl. That lasted about a month. I later hacksawed off about a 3" section around the hole (messy affair) and replaced it with high pressure hose with double ss hose clamps on each side. I took plasic zip ties and tied the repaired assembly to each other. Again, search the archives for more info.

Replacement with hose was suggested to me by a guy who does a lot of work on old Volvos when I asked if he had some lines to replace the leaking ones on my wife's '79. It works well - no problems in two years. Just remember - use a good tubing cutter that won't leave burrs on the outside (or inside for that matter), lubricate the tubing before starting to put the hose on, otherwise you'll get it part-way on and that's it. I used hose clamps, and if you do, remember to put 'em on before putting the hose on. This is a low pressure syste, so hose works just fine and it's a lot cheaper than new lines.

This is the way to go. Just remember to get hose rated for OIL!
I made the mistake of using fuel line, high presure at that.
The oil made the fuel hose fail. luckely I discovered it before any great amount of fluid leaked out.

The lines are actually rusted through somewhere at that bracket. Good thing you caught it in time to replace the cooler lines, or, if you're adventurous, splice around the bad spot at the bracket. I vaguely recall someone quoting a price around $40 each from a dealer's parts dept. My experience includes taking them from a car in the junkyard, a gamble of course, and splicing with 5/16" ?? compression fittings.
