'85 240 won't start and smells of gas 200 1985

Hi, I'm having trouble getting my brother's '85 240 to start. His distributer cap and rotor weren't looking too good so we replaced those and the coil. I took out a spark plug and it was getting a spark but it seemed pathetic and his plug wires were shot so we replaced the plugs and wires too.

Anyway, it turns over and over but with no indication that its anywhere near ready to start and after a couple of seconds it starts smelling like gas. A couple of the old plugs smelled like gas too. I've seen other posts about replacing the fuel relay, but would that be it if its smelling like gas? Any ideas?

Thanks for your help,
James

Sounds like your fuel pressure regulator may have failed. Pull the vacuum line off of it and see if there is gasoline leaking into it. If this is the problem you should also change your oil as it will be contaminated with gas.

Thanks, I replaced the fuel pressure regulator as you suggested, but it hasn't solved the problem.

Now it occasionally sounds for a second like it might start but then its back to the engine just turning but not being even close to starting.

Gas is getting to the engine and the plugs are all sparking, but it still won't start.

Would the fuel filter and/or relay make any difference? I was thinking that if gas is getting to the engine then those couldn't be too bad, right?

Anyway, I'd appreciate any ideas anyone has.

      thanks

Gas is getting to the engine and the plugs are all sparking, but it still won't start.

The timing belt may have jumped or stripped some cogs. So the sparks aren't there when the fuel is. It happens.

Using the marks on the crank pulley and t-belt cover, turn it to TDC 0° and then see if the cam sprocket 0° dot marks also line up.

Even if they do, check the distributor rotor. Its centerline should be about 5/16" past the 0° mark for #1 cylinder that is notched into the distributor body.

Thanks for the idea, it sounded good to me so I checked it out and ended up replacing the timing belt because it was cracked and seemed that things were out of wack...

Anyway, I got that all done and it hasn't made much of a difference. The engine still turns over like a champ but it doesn't start. Occasionally right after I turn the key it will give a quick sputter like it might start, but then it goes back to just turning over.

I have all the marks lined up with the timing case and the rotor seems to be pointing at #1 cylinder, though I'm not sure that I see a mark on the distributer housing... It is where the wire for the #1 cylinder is though, and I've tried turning the distributer back and forth to hopefully find the correct timing (after marking where it was to begin with), but that made no difference either.

So, are there any other ideas? Would the O2 sensor have anything to do with it? The car is still getting spark and gas...

The car was running fine until my brother drove it home one day and he said it was running really rough all of a sudden and the next time he went to start it it wouldn't start. Is there something that could have crapped out all of a sudden like that and been able to limp home before quitting altogether?

          Thanks again,
          James
