'92 960 no start 900 1992

I really need some help here. this is a long story, and bits of it have been posted here before - sorry 'bout that, but - OK - it all started a long time ago when a guy wanted a used motor dropped in his '92 960. he got a used motor from a salvage yard - out of a '93 960. dropped it in, crankshaft would not accept the torque converter. he went back to the junk yard and got the converter out of the '93. i bolted it all together and it ran like a top. couple weeks later, he's complaining about an extended crank issue, but doesn't want it repaired. another couple weeks later it won't start at all: code for "no CKP sensor signal" present, no spark trigger to any of the coils, no injector pulse, fuel pump runs "on" and cranking. scoped CKP signal - perfect all the way to the ECM. posted at iATN, got a response from a fellow who had the exact same problem after an engine swap - seems that the ring gear on these two model years ('92 and '93) have exact opposite trigger teeth for the CKP on the outer ring. in his case, swapping '93's ring gear with the one from the '92 solved the problem. tried it - didn't help. at this point, i have tried three different ECM's. i have tried a used CKP sensor from a running 960. i have tried towing it to the local Volvo expert (40 years experience) who, after a good three days of testing, just said "tell this f*ing guy to buy a new car...". i have replaced every ground on the vehicle. i have replaced the positive battery cable and battery. i have tried four or five sets of main/fuel relays. nothing works. still have perfect CKP signal to whichever computer i try and still nothing. have every prescribed input/output present/proper at the ECM and all relays and ignition switch test out OK. AND there is one other issue - once in a great while i will be testing this pig and i'll walk away in frustration and then VIOLA - my injector test light will illuminate SOLIDLY with the key in the off position - the car has decided to send constant power to the injector circuit, even though the key is off, and even though having the injetors on constantly is as useless ass having them off constantly. it will exhibit this behavior for five or ten minutes. LASTLY, it has developed a habit of flashing all trans control lights on the shifter console whenever i turn the key to the on position! ain't that grand!!

this is silly and maddening. ANY IDEAS WILL BE APPRECIATED MORE THAN I CAN SAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
have a wonderful day/evening/night/whatever...my head hurts!!!!

Sorry about the hurting head, but what does an extended crank issue mean? Sounds like you have two indepent problems. The no spark one and the injectors running without the key being on is the other.

This may not even relate to your problem, but when I replaced the head gasket on my car about 5 years ago for an oil leak, during the reassembly I never reattached the ground tang that is very near the driverside engine mount. But as my luck would have it, the car started right up, idled it for about 30 minutes and then shut it down. Upon restarting, it would crank but not fire. It took about 3 hours to figure out that missed ground point. Apparently when it initially was started the tang must have been touching metal somewhere and completed the circuit. The restart must have knocked it loose. Have you checked that one ground point? My no start condition was similar to yours. No spark, and without spark the ECM won't allow fuel.

The cam sensor is different though, I did not have that problem. But the engine should start with out the sensor even connected. Have you checked the injection and ignition relays?

Things may just come back to that ring gear.

I feel your pain, hope things work out.

Dan...thanks for the input. the extended crank issue is when the vehicle will crank normally for twenty, thirty seconds or maybe even longer before firing up and running. I have replaced all the grounds on the car, including the one you mention - no ground on the vehicle has more than .02 volt drop at this point.
i was actually refering to the Crankshaft Position Sensor in my post. the Cam sensor was replaced...i told the guy that the Cam sensor should not cause a no start, but it was worth a shot(i've seen stranger things solve problems, things that made even less sense!). OK, i'm off to eat some more Tylenol!!
      have a good day.

I don't know if this will help as a 96 has a considerably different injection system. But my 96 is doing the flashing transmission mode lights during cranking as well. It doesn't start eiter. See the post for any similarities. When I checked the wiring diagram the mode lights get power thru the transmission control module which should be the same as yours. I haven't tried disconnecting the transmission control module prior to attempting to start but I'm going to tomorrow. I have a couple of days to trouble shoot and I'm slowly working my way thru every component and connection. So far same results as yours. I WILL find it.

i did try disconnecting all the trans control connectors to see if one those was interfering with the engine controls, but it didn't help. as you say, the '96 injection system is a bit different...so maybe my results won't apply ot your situation. good luck with it, and PLEASE do let me know what you find!!
