Intermittent Rear End Knocking Sound 900 1995

Intermittent Rear End Knocking Sound:
Can anyone please advise me about an intermittent knock which seems to be coming from the rear end of my 940 estate. Like most sounds it’s a bit difficult to describe! But I’ll have a go.

The car hasn’t been used for a week or so and the weather has been wet at times and also very hot during this time.

The noise seems to occur when negotiating a right hand turn and whilst moving slowish (20mph).

The sound is a dull thud, which could be mistaken for the sound made when having driven over a small branch which then bounces up to knock the underside of the body. I thought this was the cause at first – but then it happened again!

I would appreciate any ideas on what could cause this noise; I suppose there could be a number of parts to investigate, springs, bushes etc, perhaps something needs a squirt of oil.

Whirring Noise:
On another point, I posted a message last year about a whirring noise which seemed to come from the front of the engine (http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/?id=720839).

I never got to the bottom of what caused it, however, once the weather warmed up in the spring of this year the noise seem to fade away, but now that the mornings are cooler the noise is beginning to return – any ideas?

Many thanks

Jonathan

Dear Jonathan,

Good p.m. and hope this finds you well. Did you check the top shock bolts? Were they loose? If the shock bolts were tights, did you find another source of the noise?

Yours faithfully,

spook

Spook,

Thanks for the idea - I plan to take a good look over this weekend using my neighbours pit - It's outside and the weather has been lousy up till now.

I'll let you know what I find out.

Thanks

Jonathan

Dear Jonathan,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. Check the top shock absorber bolts. They are accessible from the wheel wells. Remove the tire. You'll see a round, rubber plug. Pry out the plug, using a screwdriver, being careful not to cut into the rubber.

You'll see the bolt head. Tighten fully.

The sound made by loose shock bolts is like a bowling ball rolling around in the trunk/cargo space.

You'll hear it most when going over bumps, and at low speeds.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook
