Air Mass Meter 200 1989

Does anyone have an Air Mass Meter that they woul like to sell? The catch is that I live in Toronto, On. I can find plenty online in the US, but by the time I go through the wonderful $ conversion, shipping and those special customs and tarriffs and hidden brokers fees (remember Free Trade?), it becomes too costly. I have an '89 240DL with a B230 engine. I am looking for a good used AMM, not a rebuild - Bosch part # 0 280 212 016.
So if you live up here and have such a device, I'd love to hear from you.

    Are you sure the AMM is your problem?

    Instead of buying via a website, what would be the issue if someone from the US mailed you one? Like Federal Express or UPS?

      Tony; I'm pretty sure it's the AMM because I replaced it today and it did the trick. If I get anything from the States they will charge duty on it and can even hold it for up to 3 weeks or so if they want. So you're looking at the cost of the part, the $ conversion, shipping, duty, customs, and maybe a broker trying to extort a handling fee out of you because they held it in their hands for a minute or so. Let's hear it for Ronnie and Brian's legacy - Free Trade!

    Umm, if you had asked this question a couple of days ago, I would have suggested StandardAutoWreckers (.com) Sewell's road in Scarborough. It's $45 all-you-can-carry weekend.

    There was a 90-245 at StandardAutoWreckers (.com) yesterday (sat.) which had a bashed in engine compartment. The interior was pretty stripped (blower still there) but the engine compartment had been basically left alone. You could try popping up there to see if it still has an AMM.

    Entry will be $45 (wich you might be able to avoid paying if you don't enter with a toolbox and explain that you heard that there was a 240). It's beige/gold and at the end of the import aisle in front of the gates. If they make you pay and you don't take anything, you'll get a credit for future entry/purchase.

    There are also 5-740's which may also have appropriate AMM's. But those to would probably be stripped by now.

      Thanks Trev29! I got your message this morning and quick popped out there for a look. I found the wagon you were talking about and lo and behold, the AMM was still there. But when I cut the hoses and pulled it out I could see that it had been smashed in the wreck. Man, that car must have hit a pole hard. So I ended up with a receipt for the $45 which I'll use on the AMM that they say they can get for about $125. Thanks for your help.

        BTW, I've ordered stuff fom the US and got hit with the extra charges when sent via UPS (maybe Fedex) but when ordered from Groton there were no extra charges cuz they sent it by US postal service (ordinary mail).

        Wow, they cost that much? (I'm a carb guy. Don't even know what an AMM looks like.)

        Oh, well. Maybe someone else can sell you one cheaper and you can check out the next $45 weekend in Oct. I'll try to stop by a few days prior and post my findings.

        Addendum.
        I just checked out FCPGroton's website to compare 240 to 740 AMM's since they have the same B230 engine. Looks like, based on part numbers, you can use 740 AMMs. So maybe you should have checked out the 740's at the yard while you were there.

          Trev; Yeah they cost $125cdn and up from the looks of it. I went out to AADCO in Brampton and bought one off of a 940 - same Bosch part number ending in 016. I put it on this afternoon and it seems to have done the trick. Better starting and smoother running. By the way, I took out the cold weather flap in the air cleaner as I was reading where they can cause the air to get too hot and cook the filament in the air sensor. Still, I'm going to crack the old one open and see if it's repairable so as to have a spare. An AMM is also called a Mass Air Sensor and an Air Mass Filter to name just 2. I was going to get a starter today as well ($60) but the guy talked me out of it just yet. Mine is on it's way out but he suggested I wait and make sure that the flywheel is okay before putting one of theirs in so as to get the full 60-day guarantee while it's in the car. I'll check the flywheel when they take the tranny off to replace the rear engine seal which is leaking oil. And then it's the differential seal. And then it's a new exhaust system. And then it's front shocks. And then it's bushings for the rear springs. And finally a new hood release cable and to top it all off, new horns. And by then it'll be something else. Ahh the joy.

            I'm in Brampton and have bought a rad ($75) from AADCO. But then found Standard. So now I'm driving out there for the deals.

            Nooo. I think its supposed to be the other way. Ie. Don't remove it else hot air will always be entering. Instead you're supposed to block it shut (or plug the hot intake tube) so that no hot air enters.

            Is it snapped? (I've replaced mine with picture hanging wire and it's held for years. Can also use heavier binding wire). Or is it just hard opening? (outer cable sheath may have slipped by the holdowns in the engine compartment, so cable needs to be pulled back and tightened down).

              Trev; It is with great dismay that I read your last post where you said I should keep the flap in the air cleaner. I have not and it partially broke getting it out. But this doesn't make sense to me. The only time hot air would get into the AMM that way with no flap is on a very hot day and I'm idling. I mean if I'm moving....or if it's winter...Am I missing something here? I've been told that the flap is unnecessary unless you are living in a really cold climate and that a thermostat inside shuts the flap so that warm air is generated past the AMM to help warm up the car quicker. A couple of people have said that it can get stuck closed and cook the filament prematurely. Have I goofed?

                The air box has 2 intakes. One is through a snorkle in front by the rad. The other is through the corrugated hot air intake hose that wraps around the engine compartment and takes in hot air off the engine for quicker warm ups.

                It's the hot air intake that is regulated by the thermostatically controlled flap and it's supposed to be shut off once the engine has warmed up.

                If that flap stays open due to thermostat failure (or in your case, lack of the flap) then hot air from the engine compartment will enter continuously and overheat your AMM. If this is the flap that you removed, I suggest you plug the hot air intake hole/tube.

                  I understand now. Unfortunately, the air intake hose no longer wraps around my engine - it rotted off about 4 years ago and the dealership and a few others said not to worry about it. What you're saying makes sense though. Having installed the 'new' AMM, it runs smoother with a bit more power but I thought it would start easier than it does. I guess I could have smoked the plugs by driving it for 3 months with a bad AMM. Any thoughts?

    I'm afraid I don't have any to sell, but I know where you can get as many as you will ever need. The best little Volvo repair shop in the world is just outside of Guelph, only 45 minutes away from Toronto. They just recently replaced my 740's AMM with a used one, not a rebuilt one, so I know they have them around. The shop is affectionately referred to as the Volvo graveyard because of the stacks of used and dead volvos out front and behind and...

    ANYWAY, head up the 401 to the Brock Road exit (old Hwy 6), go north for about 10km and you'll see the shop on the right side of the road immediately before the lights. They WILL have what you want or will be able to get it. Be forewarned though, the two brothers who own the shop are a little slow sometimes. Not dumb, they just take their time. They have been repairing volvos for over 50 years though, so they know their stuff, and if you go into the place knowing you may have to be patient, you'll do just fine. They are only open during the week from about 730 until 530. Here's the phone # 519-822-3297

      Thanks for responding, and I think you're talking about Hamilton's Volvo Corner Garage. You're right, they are a major boneyard near Toronto. But I find them expensive considering they only do a 30 day guarantee. I'm stil hoping for someone in Canada that has that unit for sale. Anybody out there?
