1984 242 fuel pump issues 200 1984

Lately my car has been stammering under load. Last night the fuel pump started kicking opn and off as I was driving down the road. Here come the questions....
I drive an 84 242 FCPgroton confused me a bit as to which fuel pump(s) I would need if I replace them.

RELAYS: I'm told my car has 2 fuel pump relays. I got this information from an ebay auction so I don't know if it was reliable or not. (They claimed the 83-84 240s needed 2 relays) What are the chances this is all I need to do? Car seems to start alright though it takes some loving if cold.

It seems my car has the in-tank and under-car pumps. What am I getting myself into if I decide to change these out on my own? Does one have a tendancy to fail more than the other?

    Jerry,

If your car is a turbo it has one FP relay. If it not it has 2 FP relays. If the car acts up when the tank is below half, it could be your in-tank pump or a bad hose on that pump. Check for operation by listening for pump through an open gas tank cover.

Search on this forum for more on fuel pumps. Is your car a turbo?

Your car has an in-tank pump and a main pump under the car. Each is controlled by its own relay. What is most likely happening is that the in-tank pump is not "feeding" the main pump. Check if the problem goes away with a full tank of gas, and returns when the tank is less than half full. There is a rubber hose that picks up fuel from in the tank. This hose goes bad over time. From what I hear this is a cheap and easy fix.

    Hope this helps.

Your car has an in-tank pump and a main pump under the car. True
Each is controlled by its own relay Not true

The non-turbo LH 2.0 FI system does have 2 relays, but only 1 controls the pumps. The Fuel relay feeds fuse 5 (to the in-tank pump) in parallel with the Main Pump. It also feeds the injectors and the idle air control.

The System relay feeds the AMM and ECU.
